Farm sights in Maui

  1. 'Ulupalakua Ranch

A holdout from an earlier era, 'Ulupalakua Ranch was established in the mid-19th century by James Makee, a whaling captain who jumped ship and befriended Hawaiian royalty. King David Kalakaua, the 'Merrie Monarch,' was a frequent visitor who loved to indulge in late-night rounds of poker and champagne.

Hwy 37 winds south through ranch country offering good views of Kaho'olawe and the little island of Molokini. The 20,000-acre ranch is still worked by paniolo (note the sign on the ranch store warning cowboys to wipe the shit off their boots before entering!) and has some 6000 head of cattle, as well as a small herd of Rocky Mountain elk.

    Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm

Up for a little aromatherapy? Maybe it's time to immerse yourself in the soothing scents at Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm. More than 30 varieties of lavender blanket the hillside - stroll the garden paths and feel your whole body relax. Then sit for a spell with a glass of lavender lemonade (around US$3), or browse the gift shop for lavender-scented bath gels and creams.

You can also join a Lavender Garden Tea Tour (call for reservations) and get the skinny on all things lavender, including a sampling of lavender scones and tea.

    Surfing Goat Dairy

The goats at the 42-acre Surfing Goat Dairy are playful but, no, they don't really ride the waves. They are, however, the source of all that luscious chevre cheese adorning the menus of Maui's top restaurants. The little store here carries an amazing variety of these creamy treats: for island flavor try the mango supreme.

Not everything is geared to the connoisseur - your kids will love meeting the goat kids up close in a fun 20-minute dairy tour (minimum three people).
