Lonely Planet review

As far as prisons go, this stone-walled calaboose doesn’t look too imposing. A remnant of the whaling era, Hale Paʻahao (Stuck-in-Irons House) was built in 1852 and looks much as it did 150 years ago. One of the tiny cells displays a list of arrests in 1855. The top three offenses were drunkenness (330 arrests), ‘furious riding’ (89) and lascivious conduct (20). There’s no record of how much of that furious riding might have been done in a drunken state! Other transgressions of the day included profanity, aiding deserting sailors and drinking ‘awa (kava).
