Introducing Keaʻau & Around
As travelers head down the 'hill' from Volcano towards Hilo, they whisk past blink-and-miss communities that were once sugar plantations but are now home to booming subdivisions such as Hawaiian Acres, Orchidland Estates and Hawaiian Paradise Park (the fastest growing subdivision on the island). For travelers, there are some excellent lodgings tucked away within these sprawling subdivisions, making it an attractive base midway between Hilo, Volcano and Puna. The main town servicing these communities is Keaʻau, a cluster of gas stations and stores just off Hwy 11, which is a good place to fuel up and move on.
Keaʻau is reached by exiting Volcano Hwy (Hwy 11) at Keaʻau–Pahoa Rd (Hwy 130), which is also nicknamed Keaʻau Bypass Rd, Pahoa Bypass Rd and Kalapana Hwy.
