Kailua has no hotels, but suburban homestyle B&Bs and vacation rentals abound, some just a short walk from the beach. Most are nonsmoking, don’t accept credit cards, require an advance deposit and multiple-night stays, charge a one-time cleaning fee and are legally prohibited from offering hot breakfasts. The majority are unlicensed, whether they’re managed by local vacation-rental agencies or listed on websites such as Vacation Rentals by Owner (VRBO; www.vrbo.com), HomeAway (www.homeaway.com) and Air B&B (www.airbnb.com). Book online or call ahead (not just from the airport!) a few weeks or even months in advance.
