Elegant and distinctive, everything here from the personalized greeting upon arrival to the gourmet 'plane picnic' packed for your flight home exemplifies sophisticated luxury. At these prices, it's amazing the place retains a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere - testament to the discreet, aloha-laced service and hip clientele.

The Four Seasons' reputation precedes it and Hualalai doesn't disappoint. The grounds - including the exclusive Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course - are spectacular and absorb guests well. The place is especially magical at night with tiki torches burning throughout. Once you step into the hushed opulence of your room, you'll know you've arrived. Pillow top mattresses, flat screen TV, private balcony or lanai, fine linens and plush, tailored robes begin your descent into total relaxation. The bathrooms (with L'Occitane amenities and fresh orchids throughout) are simply sublime. Downstairs rooms have sensual outdoor showers; jump in after a workout in the world-class gym. A couple of quibbles: at this price, in-room wi-fi should be free and the coffee set-up should stock 100% Kona, not that 10% stuff. There's just a sliver of beach here - but you have the whole island for that.
