Kilauea Iki Trail
Kilauea Iki Trail information
Beginning at the Kilauea Iki Overlook parking lot off Crater Rim Dr, this 4-mile, clockwise loop takes you through a jaw-dropping microcosm of the park, quickly descending 400ft through fairytale ohia forest and then cutting across the mile-wide crater. Scattered vents lace the crater surface with ethereal steam plumes, while the wrinkly, often iridescent lava surface is peppered with ʻohelo shrubs, ohia trees and ferns.
If you can only do one day hike, make it this one. Hitting the trail before 8am is a good way to beat the day-tripping crowds. The faint footpath across the crater floor is marked by ahu (stone cairns) to aid navigation. Don't wander off-trail to explore any steaming vents, lava tubes or caves without an experienced guide.
Geologically oriented trail brochures ($2) are sold at Kilauea Visitor Center.
