Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area
Forget swimming at this sandy but rock-strewn beach. The spacious 217-acre grounds are, however, ideal for picnicking, exploring tide pools and experiencing a locals' beach. There's also a pristine, sandy-bottomed pool for your keiki near the southern entrance gate. At low tide, tiny sea urchins, crabs and bits of coral resemble mini lava rock–aquariums.
