Hawai'i (The Big Island)

Café restaurants in Hawai'i (The Big Island)

  1. A

    Coffee Shack

The Shack has an amazing view from its intimate, open-air deck surrounded by tropical foliage. The place is perched precariously on the makai side of the highway and has very limited parking. The breakfasts, hearty salads, sandwiches and pizzas are consistently OK, while, ironically, the coffee gets bad reviews. Consider sliding in for a beer right before closing. It's between the 108- and 109-mile markers.

  2. B

    Peaberry & Galette

Let the modern ambient tunes and the espresso machine dose you up on uber-hipness at this too-cool-for-school creperie. The salade niçoise and quiche do not disappoint, though the disposable cups and utensils do. The sweet or savory crepes are beautifully presented if a little under-filled. Italian, not local, coffee is served.

  3. C

    Kiawe Kitchen

This pleasant café with outdoor seating offers dependable versions of shrimp scampi, mahimahi and rib-eye steak, plus thin-crust pizza and Big Island microbrews. It's a local favorite with a friendly atmosphere.

  4. D

    Kohala Rainbow Café

Jen's small café has tasty chicken Caesar salads, good chili and a recommended Greek wrap sandwich with organic greens. Also on the menu are fresh-fruit smoothies, deli sandwiches and soups.
