This steep, rocky trail to the valley floor is doable for most, thanks to switchbacks and its 0.75-mile distance. Not counting photo-op stops, walking time averages 20-25 minutes each way. Avoid trekking down after rainfall, since the mud-slicked rocks will be precarious. Makeshift walking sticks are often left at the trailhead. There are no facilities.

At the mouth of the valley lies a rugged black-sand beach. The surf is rough, with rip currents year-round. Swimming is out of the question, even if you see local surfers testing the waves.
