Lambert-St Louis International Airport (314-426-8000; www.lambert-stlouis.com) is the Great Plains’ hub, with flights to all major regional and US cities. The airport is 12 miles northwest of downtown and is connected by the light-rail MetroLink ($3.50), taxi (about $35) or Trans Express (800-844-1985; $15) shuttles, which can drop you off at downtown hotels.

Greyhound (314-231-4485; 1450 N 13th St) buses depart several times daily to Chicago ($48, five to seven hours), Memphis ($53, 5½ to 7½ hours), Kansas City ($43, 4½ hours) and many more cities from a rough neighborhood north of downtown.

The low-cost Megabus (877-462-6342) runs services to Chicago and Kansas City from as little as $8 one-way; it stops next to Union Station.

Metro (314-231-2345; www.metrostlouis.org; day-pass $4.50) runs local buses and the MetroLink light-rail system. Bus No 93 connects most points of interests, including Soulard, downtown and the Central West End. Ride free between Union Station and Laclede’s Landing weekdays 11:30am to 1:30pm.

Amtrak (314-331-3304; 551 S 16th St) travels six times daily to Chicago ($22, 5½ hours). There are also daily trains to Kansas City ($25, six hours) and Dallas ($86, 16¼ hours). For those using a railpass, a connecting bus service to Memphis costs $35.
