Lonely Planet review

The centerpiece of this National Park Service property, the striking Gateway Arch; is the Great Plains' own Eiffel Tower. Completed in 1965 the Arch stands 630ft high and symbolizes St Louis' historical role as 'Gateway to the West.'

Designed in 1965 by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, the Arch stands 192m (630ft) tall and just as wide at its base, and is supposed to symbolise St Louis' historical role as 'Gateway to the West'.

The Museum of Westward Expansion, under the Arch, has exhibits about Plains Indians, Lewis and Clark, and buffalo soldiers.
