Lonely Planet review

Minnesota's excellent zoo has more than 2700 animals living in their 'natural' habitats. A highlight is the Discovery Bay aquarium centre, a maze of underground tunnels and walkways that bring you face-to-face with sharks and rays. The emphasis is, funnily enough, on cold-climate creatures.

The Minnesota Trail presents 59 species indigenous to Minnesota, such as lynx, pumas and beavers; the Northern Trail recreates the harsh winter conditions of North America, so you can see how goose, moose and Siberian tigers have adapted to their harsh homes.

The zoo is 32km (20mi) south of the Twin Cities in the quaintly named suburb of Apple Valley.
