Photo of the Week – Grand Canyon in Black & White
Blog: Ottsworld - 29 October 2010
An eerie, dead tree sits at the edge of the most grand canyon in the world. During my recent photo trip to the Grand Canyon, I decided to try some black and white photography since I couldn’t seem to capture the greatness of the canyon in color. I wondered if the black and white photography [...]

Travel Terror
Blog: Ottsworld - 28 October 2010
I heard a rustle in the bushes and immediately tensed up; what if it was coming after me and would attack without reason? I imagined big fangs and sped up my strides. Suddenly I heard a noise above me, I stopped; looked up and wondered if I should run for cover. I picked up my [...]

Natural vs. Man-Made
Blog: Ottsworld - 26 October 2010
I close my eyes and shut off my brain’s internal GPS system; when I re-open them I see a foreign land. Surrounding me is barren, red landscape stretching out as far as my eyes can scan; random alien-like rock formations are peppered throughout and clay colored mountains are in the distance. There are no trees, [...]

Happy National Parks Week!
Blog: Lonely Planet blog - 20 April 2010
We’re huge lovers of the US national parks so we’re excited that the National Park Service has waived fees April 17-25 in honor of National Parks Week. Yosemite is just a mere 3-4 hours from Lonely Planet offices, so that is usually the long-weekend-of-choice for staff based in our US office. Spring is the perfect [...]

Astonishingly grand! The Grand Canyon - Arizona
Blog: A Travel Around the World - 30 March 2010
We’d seen heaps of pictures and documentaries about the great Grand Canyon and there was little left to imagination on what to expect, a big hole, but as we approached the South Rim and the vista opened up over this gigantic abyss it overwhelmed our senses. Standing on the edge, few steps from more than 1km sharp drop, looking down into the canyon made us feel like two tiny, fragile ants in this world.

After the Flood- Havasu Falls, Havasupai Reservation, Arizona
Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 16 October 2009
The drive to the trailhead down to Havasu Falls on the Havasupai reservation is gorgeous. Winding, deserted, rising and falling through desert into forest and back into desert again. It dead-ends in a parking lot, pack mule hitching area and helipad grandiosely named Hilltop, AZ. This is the only point within the Havasupai reservation that’s connected by road. From here its about eight miles down, down, down to the lone Havasupai town, Supai.

Grand Canyon Slideshow Surprise
Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 10 October 2009
We would probably have never known about it had Karen’s parents not taken a trip to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. But they did (had a ball, by the way) and one night after dinner in the gorgeous lodge right on the canyon rim they wandered into a room where a ranger was about to present a slideshow about his favorite part of the north rim area, a remote region called Toroweap. Imagine their surprise when a number of the images in the slide who were picture we’d taken of OUR TRUCK during our visit to Toroweap back in October 2008.

Glimpsing the Grand Canyon
Blog: Away Together - 29 September 2009
Our visit to the Grand Canyon was not unlike the Griswolds’. We had never been to the Grand Canyon and always wanted to go — but our dream is to raft the river, hike rim to rim and camp for days. Alas, that was not meant to be.

If I was the Grand Canyon
Blog: Send The Bugger Back - 26 April 2009
Note – Again, this is yesterday’s post as I couldn’t find a net connection. Just another little whinge to start us off folks, the petty beaurcracy and ID craze is starting to do my nut in. About 10 of us from the hostel went out and they wouldn’t let me and another Dutch lad (Jorma, [...]
