Historic Building sights in St Augustine

  1. Old Drugstore

Built in 1739, this dusty pharmacy offers a unique collection of antique vials and tonics in sepia-colored bottles, as well as some other curiosities, like vintage suppository molds. Adjacent to the artifacts is an extensive assortment of herbal remedies for sale (from stevia leaf to lotus flowers) for homeopathic use.

  2. Old Jail

Built in 1891, this is the former town prison and residence of the town's first sheriff, Charles Joseph 'the terror' Perry (towering menacingly at 6ft 6in tall and weighing 300lb). Today, costumed 'deputies' escort visitors through cellblocks and detail the site's arresting history.

    Hotel Ponce de León

An 80ft domed rotunda and stained glass crafted by Louis Comfort Tiffany are the hallmarks of the Spanish Renaissance Revival hotel, Henry Flagler's flagship resort. Completed in 1888, it had to contend almost immediately with the vagaries of tourism: a yellow-fever epidemic and the worst freeze in Florida's history (1895). Nonetheless, this architectural wonder, the first major poured-concrete structure in the US, quickly became the country's most exclusive winter resort, before succumbing to a lack of guests in the 1960s, which led it to become part of the private Flagler College.

    Oldest Wooden School House

Built from red cedar and cypress, the 200-year-old building is peopled by animatronic teachers and students, providing a glimpse into 18th-century life and education. Naughty kids may be frightened into civility when they see the Dungeon.
