Serenity Garden Tea House
Are we in London or what? Definitely not, but we are in the South, as easy as it is to forget, and tea-house charms go a long way in these parts. This spot, a more old-school, frilly option than the Little Tea House, is also way more concerned with your sweet tooth.
Its glass case of 'fancies' is a beauty to behold - white chocolate key-lime cheesecake, chocolate-macadamia nut mousse pie, lemon cakes - and its pear-and-gorgonzola salad, curried chicken salad and scone-filled 'low teas' aren't bad, either.

Karma Car Wash
- Miami, USA
- Restaurants › Café
This eco-friendly car wash also serves soy chai lattes, organic tapas and good microbrews. The idea could be precocious in execution, but ends up being fun – more fun than your average wash ‘n’ wait, anyways. Of course, hybrid drivers get a 25% discount, and the bar becomes a lounge at 8pm, with DJs spinning as you wonder ‘Should I have gotten the wax finish?’

Kafa’s Café
- Miami, USA
- Restaurants › Café
New when we visited, Kafa’s was a bare-bones café and pretty in that understated way bare-bones cafés can be. There’s a pleasing menu of soup, salad and sandwiches, which attracts artsy types. Pity them; it must be hard to act grim and pathos-driven when you can enjoy a tuna melt under perfect Miami conditions in the sunny outdoor seating area.

I Love Calle Ocho
- Miami, USA
- Restaurants › Café
And we love you. This eclectic café, with its bagels and chicken-salad wraps, is a good resting spot between rice and beans, although there are apparently two grandmas in the kitchen who whip up excellent Cuban fare upon request. A rainbow sticker on the door indicates gay-friendly, a bit of a rare pronouncement in these parts.

Painted Horse Café
An unassuming little gem right on the highway, the Painted Horse is elegant and earthy all at once. You’ll find a well-mixed crowd of older Palm Beach types and well-coiffed young folks; a classy menu featuring grilled salmon, seared tuna and New York strip steak, and an extensive wine list.

Bean There Traveler's Coffee House
When you're heading between St Petersburg and Tampa, this local almost-SoHo coffee shop serves breakfast (all day on weekends), sandwiches and strong coffee. Take Bayshore Blvd from downtown to Bay-to-Bay Blvd and turn right; it's on the right side of the road, past MacDill Ave.

Brew Urban Cafe
Ah. You’re one of those types who needs a coffee shop filled with shaggy artsy-fartsies and whiny indie music wherever you go, but you think Starbucks is too corporate, right? Brew’s as good as you’re gonna get here, hipster.

Citrus Cafe
This true find has hands-on owners and it shows. Dine in the courtyard on casual, light and creative sandwiches served on foccacia; the spinach and artichoke dip is always a fine choice. Good espresso, beer and wine polish things off nicely.

End of the Line Cafe
A funky, fair-trade café with velour and vinyl lounges, this is the place for casual vegan fare – like tempeh reubens and tofu BLTs – as well as regular cultural events, like Friday’s open-mike night.
