Beautiful, unique lighthouse with great history - loved it!"

Really enjoyed this place. It's unusual, because it still functions as a lighthouse, and because it is a really beautiful tower with a cool old southern house attached (the house has a gift shop and bathrooms and a little museum.) The climb to the top of the tower is nearly as breathtaking as the view from up there (steep stairs, but they look like wrought iron - very lovely!)
The staff was friendly and told us a lot about the lighthouse history and the history of the area. The lighthouse has Civil War history and apparently was hit by cannons during the war.
The fee to climb to the top is reasonable ($5 for adults, $3 for kids and seniors), but people who are afraid of heights or have very small kids shouldn't go up. The museum part was free though.
Also - it's right across the street from the Naval Aviation Museum, so it's easy to see both in one day.
