Lonely Planet review for Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

There’s dazzling art inside this handsome museum, includes newly-acquired Norman Rockwells and George PA Healy’s famous portrait of the city’s namesake close to death. Also look for antiquities and a really fun interactive kids’ exhibit. Draped with wisteria and shaded by a massive, mossy oak so large it needs supports for its limbs, the garden is a grand place to unwind after absorbing all the beauty inside. Both the museum and gardens are impressively accessible, including a number of braille and audio guides.

Great Place for Kids and Adults

    nikikru recommends this,

Has a great cycle of art and a room focused on the history of the Cummer family. The gardens are great, they line the river. There's a lot of benches to sit on and even in winter (I went in early Dec) it still looked good. You can bring food and drinks for a picnic. There's also a little cafe inside that is resonably priced.
The kid's room is AMAZING. Sooo many interesting activities that tie to the regular exhibits. Its a great way for kids and adults to interact/connect with art.
Only negative thing I have to say is that the bathrooms were not up to par with the rest of the museum. I went during the most unpopular time and it still was eh.

    Little gem of a museum

    grimss recommends this,

This really is the loveliest little museum you can imagine. Born from the artworks collected by Mrs. Cummer, and located on the site of the impressive former Cummer compound (multiple Cummer members living in turn-of-the-early-20th-century splendor), there is a jewel box quality to this impressive collection. Besides the items already cited, there is a very extensive porcelain collection and a select showing of early American furniture, South American tribal items, and even Renaissance paintings. Most amazing of all is the large and lush European garden overlooking the St. Johns River--and the museum offers a unique program whereby garden visitors can pick up free watercolors kits to record a take-home image of the garden's beauty. My kids also love the imaginatively kid-friendly Art Connections wing. Most definitely worth a stop.
