Lonely Planet review
This memorial is the administrative headquarters of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve, a confederation of federal, state and local parks working with private landowners to maintain the St John's River ecosystem.
The memorial itself is an approximately two-thirds-scale model of the original fort built here by French Huguenots in 1562, on what's believed to be the original site. The park also features several hundred acres of pristine wilderness along the St John's River.
To reach the main visitors center from downtown, take Matthews Bridge to the Atlantic Blvd Expressway (Hwy 10 east) and then turn left onto Monument Rd; follow that to Fort Caroline Rd and turn right - the entrance is about half a mile ahead. From the north, take I-95 to Hwy 9A (essentially an eastern extension of I-295) and follow that to Merrill Rd (there are big signs all the way). Turn left on Merrill, which becomes Fort Caroline Rd.
