Getting there & around
The easiest way to travel the Keys is by car, though traffic along the one major route, US Hwy 1, can be maddening during the winter high season. Greyhound (800-229-9424) buses serve all Key destinations along US Hwy 1, departing from downtown Miami. If you fly into Fort Lauderdale or Miami, the Keys Shuttle (888-765-9997) provides door-to-door service to most of the Keys from around $90 one-way. Reserve at least 24 hours in advance.
You can fly into Key West International Airport (EYW) with frequent flights from major cities, most going through Miami; or Marathon Airport (305-743-2155), which has less frequent, more expensive flights. Or, take a fast catamaran from Fort Myers or Miami; call the Key West ExpressFerry (888-539-2628; www.keywestshuttle.com) for schedules and fares.
Old Town in Key West is best navigated on foot or by moped, with rates from $15 per three hours. Try Keys Moped & Scooter (305-294-0399; 523 Truman Ave). If you need to ditch your car, finding street parking can be a challenge. Give up? Head to the 24-hour Park ānā Ride garage (305-293-6426; 300 Grinnell St), where you can park for $1.50 per hour or $10 all day.
