  1. A

    Pontiac Cafe

Lead the band at the Pontiac. The ‘live band karaoke’ gigs every Friday night are awesome, and the bands know a million chestnuts from the rock and pop canon.

  2. B

    Brooklyn Bowl

This 23,000-sq-ft venue inside the former Hecla Iron Works Company combines bowling, microbrews, food and groovy live music. In addition to the live bands that regularly tear up the stage, there are NFL game days, karaoke and DJ nights – in fact, Questlove of the Roots can be found at the turntables on most Thursday nights. They also have bowling.

  3. C

    House of Blues

Though you can swing by for some good ol' Southern cooking, the real reason to come to this national chain is the music. On Sundays, the Gospel Brunch features rockin' gospel with a buffet breakfast.

  4. Jellyrolls

Comedians tickle the keys of dueling pianos and encourage the audience to partake in all kinds of musical silliness.

  5. D

    Paradise Lounge

One of Boston’s most legendary rock clubs: here you can get up close and personal with some big names. The newish lounge has a hip, cozy atmosphere and a limited menu.

  6. First Encounter Coffee House

The little yellow Chapel of the Pines hosts acoustic and folk performances put on by this long-running organization.

  7. E

    Hideout

Hidden behind a factory at the edge of Bucktown, this two-room lodge of indie rock and alt-country is well worth seeking out. The owners have nursed an outsider, underground vibe, and the place feels like the downstairs of your grandma's rumpus room. Music and other events (bingo, literary readings etc) take place nightly.

  8. F

    Antone's

A key player in Austin's musical history, Antone's has attracted the best of the blues and other popular local acts since 1975. All ages, all the time.

    Club Congress

Skinny jeansters, tousled hipsters, aging folkies, dressed-up hotties – the crowd at Tucson's most-happening club inside the grandly aging Hotel Congress defines the word eclectic. And so does the musical line-up, which usually features the finest local and regional talent. Wanna drink at a bar? Step inside the adjacent Tap Room, open since 1919.

  10. Gip's Place

You'll need to ask a local for directions to this tin-roof makeshift backyard shack in a dicey neighborhood in Bessemer, one of the only truly authentic juke joints left outside Mississippi. Gip, a gravedigger by day, opens the doors on Saturday only, when the place is shoulder-to-shoulder with blues fans come one come all. It's BYOB but there's no need – free moonshine is passed around in Mason jars, permitted by a legal loophole in Alabama that says it must be given away, not sold.

  12. Happy Dog

Listen to scrappy bands while munching on a wienie, for which you can choose from among 50 toppings, from gourmet (black truffle) to, er, less gourmet (peanut butter and jelly); in the Gordon Sq district.

  13. Knitting Factory

This mid-sized venue opened in 2010, filling a gap in Reno's music scene with mainstream and indie favorites.

  14. KTAO Solar Center

Taos's best venue for live music. Local, national and even international acts stop here to rock the house. Even on nights when there are no shows, you can watch the DJs in the booth at the 'world's most powerful solar radio station' while hitting happy hour at the Solar Center's bar.

  15. Magic Stick & Majestic Theater

The White Stripes and Von Bondies are rockers who've risen from the beer-splattered ranks at the Magic Stick. The Majestic Theater next door hosts larger shows. There's bowling, billiards, a pizza joint and cafe. Something cool rocks here nightly.

  16. Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Hearing the world- renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir is a must-do on any SLC bucket list. A live choir broadcast goes out every Sunday at 9:30am. September through November, and January through May, attend in person at the Tabernacle. Free public rehearsals are held here from 8pm to 9pm Thursday. From June to August and in December – to accommodate larger crowds – choir broadcasts and rehearsals are held at the 21,000-seat LDS Conference Center. Performance times stay the same, except that an extra Monday-to-Saturday organ recital takes place at 2pm.

    Red Palace

A pillar of the frenzied H St scene, Red Palace has three bars and decent craft beer selections. The multiroom space books a mix of live bands and burlesque shows, with an abundance of indie rock and experimental sounds.

  18. Riot Room

Part dive, part cutting-edge live-music venue, the Riot Room always rocks – and has many good beers.

  19. Skipper's Smokehouse

Did this place blow in from the Keys on a hurricane? No, for over 30 years Skipper's has been an unpretentious, beloved Old Florida institution and Tampa's best open-air venue for blues, funk, folk, reggae and gator-swamp rockabilly. Hell, it's so damn friendly you can bring the kids. The attached seafood restaurant is nothing special, but Skipper's certainly is. Take I-275 N to exit 52/Fletcher Ave.

  20. Steel Panther

A hair-metal tribute band makes fun of the audience, themselves and the 1980s with sight gags, one-liners and many a drug and sex reference.

  21. Tap Root

With the addition of Tap Root, Spenard cemented its reputation as the heart of Anchorage nightlife. The lively bar has 20 microbrews on tap, an impressive list of single-malt Scotch whiskeys and live bands every night of the week.

    Joint

Concerts at this intimate venue (capacity 1400) feel like private shows, even when the Killers or Coldplay are in town.

  25. K

    Tootsie's Orchid Lounge

A sister to the legendary Nashville honky tonk of the same name, this Tootsie's may lack the dusty character of the original, but the nonstop live country music is still plenty boot stompin'.

  26. L

    El Rey

A fabulous venue for local and national rock, blues and country acts. Over the years, it's hosted such stars as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and Arlo Guthrie. It also does national poetry slams and occasionally hosts CD launch parties.

    Jim Cullum's Landing

Jazz at the Landing is not just a San Antonio tradition; it's also a syndicated show on NPR (National Public Radio). Reservations recommended.
