Wild Side West
The wildest thing about this historic neighborhood women's saloon is the overgrown beer garden, with frog lawn statues, water features, porch swings and year-round Christmas lights. On chilly nights, shoot pool at a table where (local legend has it) Janis Joplin once got lucky, then flirt with the crafty gals at the sewing-machine table by the fireplace. Best on weekends; straight girls welcome, but boys are out of place here.

This small, comfortable lesbian bar has theme nights (dykes on bikes, drag-king shows) as well as a light menu, pool, karaoke and DJs. On weekends it gets packed, so figure on a bit of a wait to get in.

Lexington Club
SF's all-grrrrl bar can be cliquish at first, so be strategic: compliment someone on her skirt (she made it herself) or tattoo (she designed it herself) and casually mention you're undefeated at pinball, pool or thumb-wrestling. When she wins (because she's no stranger to the Lex), pout just a little and maybe she'll buy you a $4 beer.
