Beach sights in Chicago

  1. A

    North Avenue Beach

Chicago’s most popular beach gives off a southern California vibe. Countless volleyball nets draw scores of skimpy-suited beautiful people to the sand. Dodgeball and roller-hockey leagues collide in beachside rinks, while the steamship-inspired beach house contains a party-hearty cafe. A short walk on the curving breakwater any time of year yields postcard city views from a spot that seems almost a world apart. Lifeguards watch the beach throughout summer.

  2. B

    12th Street Beach

A path runs south from the Adler planetarium to 12th St Beach, where there are good views of the lake and the fishermen who are likely to be casting there. Despite the beach’s proximity to the Museum Campus and its zillions of visitors, the crescent-shaped sand sliver remains bizarrely (but happily) secluded. Beach bonus: if you can’t get tickets to see your favorite band at Charter One Pavilion, you can sit here and still hear the tunes.
