Lonely Planet review for Chicago Diner

The gold standard for Chicago vegetarians, this place has been serving barbecue seitan, wheat meat and tofu stroganoff for decades. The tattooed staff will guide you to the best stuff, including the peanut butter vegan ‘supershakes’ and the ‘Radical Ruben.’ Vegans take note: even the pesto for the pasta can be had without a lick of cheese.

    A Healthy Diner

For a vegetarian who loves to eat, restaurants like Chicago Diner are the answer to all of my food problems. I thought there wouldn't be a restaurant that would come close to my love for Alice & Friends, but Chicago Diner almost beat them. Whereas can I get excellent Asian style vegan food from Chicago Diner, there aren't as many choices as I could get with vegan, vegetarian, and snack foods in other places. A vegetarian eats the same things like the other people, but he eats a soy version of it. That's basically what Chicago Diner is. Chicago Diner has soy burgers, gyros, beef, philly sandwiches, burritos, riblets, boneless wings, smothered chicken, salads, soups, and soul food sides.

I ordered the smothered soy chicken, greens, and brown rice, and the cook let me try the macaroni and cheese because I'd never been there before. However, I'm glad that the cook suggested trying the mac and cheese because it was the best side I got. The smothered chicken was slightly salty, so I had to add some pepper to tame it but this was an excellent meal.

I'm grateful that this restaurant is 100% vegetarian, 100% vegan, and 80% organic. America is full of restaurants with fat foods, and it bothers me that buying greasy, unhealthy food is cheaper than buying wholesome and hearty dishes. Chicago Diner prices are surprisingly reasonable considering the portions and the taste.
