Feeling social? This casual cousin to neighboring Publican gives diners a chance to rub elbows at eight-person communal tables. Dishes are meant for sharing (though you only have to share with people you know), and the food from Chef Koren Grieveson is exceptional. Sweet and savory, the bacon-wrapped dates are the must on the menu.

    probably my favorite restaurant in Chicago

    I can't remember a time I didn't lick every plate at Avec. The food is always savory, the dishes are inventive, the portions are perfect for sharing several things and I love any excuse to try bites of everything.

    Price-wise it's not cheap but it's definitely not a great extravagance. It's nothing compared to the chef's finer dining spot next door (Blackbird) which has food to die for but the minimalist interior and annoyingly attentive service makes the whole dining experience a bit too pretentious for me.

    Avec is communal seating and they don't take reservations so if you've got a bigger party or a special occasion come early or on an off day. Not the best spot for a quiet romantic evening since you might have to get up throughout your meal to let a neighboring diner use the bathroom.
