A California Castle Perfect for Kids and Wine
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 17 October 2011
In a house with kids, it's easy to lose a weekend. I'm sure you know what I mean. With homework, swim meets, birthday parties, you can forget to take some time to just relax. I can't do it sitting at home. The list of things to do is too long, so I try to plan fun family adventures right in my Northern California Wine Country backyard. This was one of our best summer's yet. Splashing on a hot day at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, riding through Chalk Hill's Vineyards with Wine Country Trail Rides and ziplining through the redwoods.

#SunsetSunday: The Evolution of a Big Sur Sunset
Blog: Vagabond3 - 16 October 2011
The evolution of a Big Sur sunset doesn’t just start an hour or two before the sun actually sets. It’s a process that is only truly appreciated from being in the area all day long and watching Mother Nature do her thing. Big Sur is a treasure that good ole Mother Nature has truly blessed us with; It is one jaw- dropping vista point after another. Right when you think...

Seal Yoga at Elephant Seal Rookery
Blog: Vagabond3 - 13 October 2011
Some seals have all the fun… look how flexible that seal is! When Bob and I were looking for things to do along our California road trip, I stumbled upon the Elephant Seal Rookery just south of Big Sur. Immediately I was reminded of our experience at Seal Beach on Kangaroo Island and I knew it was somthing I wanted to add to our itinerary. After resurfacing from near extinction,...

Let a VW Bus redefine your California Road Trip
Blog: Vagabond3 - 10 October 2011
The best trips surprise you. Stumbling upon sights and experiences that can’t be described in guidebooks is what keeps travel interesting, but discoveries by definition aren’t always easy to find and it can be hard to ‘explore’ with only a few vacation days. A great way to infuse a getaway with wonder is to change something that’s often taken for granted (like the accommodations, transportation, etc). On our last trip...

San Francisco – Food, Drink and Fleet Week
Blog: Two Backpackers - 9 October 2011
It’s been an exciting first few days in San Francisco, California. My best friend, Samit, lives in the Pacific Heights neighborhood, which is an ideal location for a 15 minute walk down to the bay where the San Francisco Fleet Week Air Show takes place. Peering through the streets of Victorian mansions you are rewarded with [...]

Visiting San Francisco for the first time!
Blog: Two Backpackers - 6 October 2011
After visiting London for a week, I didn’t think it could get much better, but it has. From one great city to another, from London travel to San Francisco travel. The liberal and environmental activism in San Francisco has fascinated me for many years. One of my best friends moved out here from New Jersey over 6 [...]

Finding Peace on the Road
Blog: Vagabond3 - 5 October 2011
Road trips are a pretty romanticized part of travel. Add to that romanticism a vintage 1970′s VW van, no Internet or cell phone reception and the only company your significant other, and you could end up with either war or peace. We found peace. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQnGfWTrevA When we first talked with Bill, our VW camping expert, he told us to zip around the coast near Santa Barbara and slowly drive back...

Kayaking, Wine Tastings and Ostrich Feedings- California Road Trip Day Three
Blog: Vagabond3 - 3 October 2011
Day three started the way any camping trip should- waking up to birds chirping right outside your camper van. This funny little blue bird was putting on a show for us, dancing and prancing around on our picnic table waiting for an audience. Since we weren’t giving it to him, he decided to sing and squawk until we not only woke up, but also opened our shade and peered out...

Road Trip Day Two: Crossing things off the bucket list
Blog: Vagabond3 - 29 September 2011
While I don’t have a bucket list actually written down, I know there are things I really want to do and see in the world. Driving to Big Sur and exploring historic highway 1 is one of those things. I don’t know what number on the list it would be, but it’d be pretty high up there. And, today, we are crossing it off my imaginary list. We are driving...

People Stop and Stare: VW Road Trip from LA to Big Sur
Blog: Vagabond3 - 28 September 2011
I’m wound up tighter than German mousetrap, but I had no idea about this until half way through today’s drive. Somehow totally unaware of my own stress, I woke-up psyched. Jade has always wanted to visit Big Sur, and this morning we weren’t only about to drive up there, we were about to go with classic 60′s style - in a Pop-Top Westfalia deluxe. I could think of a lot...

Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in San Francisco
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 19 September 2011
Eating through San Francisco with my baby son has been one of the biggest joys of parenthood for me because there are so many restaurants to explore that offer delicious food that appeals to both baby and mommy taste buds. When Amie asked me to share my picks for five family-friendly restaurants in San Francisco, it was really tough to pick my favorites out of so many amazing eateries in the city.

Peach Pickin’!
Blog: Vagabond3 - 14 September 2011
Fall is one season that has grown on me as I’ve gotten older. In part, because I grew up in Florida and since summer lasts well into October, Fall kind of just gets by-passed; there isn’t really a harvest season, no leaves changing colors, and Key Lime Pie is usually the go-to instead of pumpkin. Considering all this, I moved to California and have searched out Fall related activities that...

Best Fish Taco in Los Angeles & Recipe
Blog: Vagabond3 - 7 September 2011
With so many taco stands, shops, restaurants, and trucks in Los Angeles, it is hard to pinpoint which is the absolute best. I don’t have an exact count, but you could probably eat at a different taco/ Mexican place for an entire year and not eat at the same one. So, when Annie and Lorenzo were in town earlier last month, Bob and I tried to narrow down the selection...

Pink’s Hot Dogs – A Hollywood Landmark
Blog: Brilliant Tips Travel Blog - 5 September 2011
Pink’s Hot Dog stand is arguably the most famous hot dog stand in the United States; certainly in Los Angeles. Some people call it a nostalgic trip into the past, others call it too crowded, and some simply call it a hot dog stand. Whatever you call it, there is no denying that Pink’s Hot [...]

Tahoe Trails Without the Crowds, but with Dogs
Blog: The Indie Traveler - 3 September 2011
Last month I road tripped up to Lake Tahoe. I sat in the traffic jams on I-80 and idled bumper-to-bumper through South Lake Tahoe. I elbowed the crowds guzzling schooners of microbrewed beer on those irresistible lake-view decks at sunset.

Surfing in Malibu: Getting back on the board
Blog: Vagabond3 - 31 August 2011
Last week, Bob and I had the pleasure of spending several days with our new BFFs, Lorenzo and Annie. We had actually met Annie at TBEX in Vancouver, but didn’t have the pleasure of meeting Lorenzo. Luckily, we were able to spend several quality days hanging out in LA before they made their final flight back to Sydney. The four of us got along really great- making jokes and picking...

#FriFotos: Reflections from Venice’s Canals
Blog: Vagabond3 - 26 August 2011
I arrived in Venice, Italy, one afternoon in October. Stepping off the train’s platform and out of the station, I was quickly greeted with water taxis, charming men singing sweet Italian melodies and the colorful old buildings reflections dancing along the sea green water. It was everything I wanted it to be, and so much more. This was the Italy that I had fallen in love with through movies and books,...

The Keeper, Yuba River Character Study
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 19 August 2011
He stood like a masthead on the wooden deck and yowled at the river. His shirt flapped open in the breeze. The stomach was hard, muscles like little knots and skin tough as old leather. Cargo pants and sandals, not-quite-Birkenstocks. Eyes as spooky-clear and sharp as the river water, blazing from behind a scraggle of [...]
