Lonely Planet review for Museum of Natural History & Gladwin Planetarium
While the permanent exhibits lack the 'hands-on' sparkle of many children's discovery centers, the Museum of Natural History boasts a few noteworthy gems and typically stages excellent special exhibits. Bug buffs should check out the glass wall holding 4,000 mounted Santa Barbara insects, as well as the replica of a pygmy mammoth skeleton unearthed on Santa Rosa Island in 1994. Outside you'll find the complete skeleton of a 72ft blue whale.
Kids especially will like the Gladwin Planetarium , which has intro-to-astronomy shows for children as well as adult programs that explore current scientific theory; call for show times.

Dino Greatness!
jackstone recommends this,
I went to the Museum of Natural History a few years ago with my young children and it was so much fun! They had a Dinosaur exhibit going on and had a sand box for kids to dig through and pretend they were discovering fossils, it was great fun! The docents were very knowledgeable and kind. The astronomy room was great too, I really enjoyed the show they put on too. Really exciting! My kids loved it so much. I can't wait to go back when I go back to Santa Barbara! I stayed at the Sandman Inn (www.thesandmaninn.com). So budget friendly and it was actually very close to the museum!
