Lonely Planet review for Mission Santa Barbara
The 1786 Mission Santa Barbara, nicknamed California's 'Queen of the Missions, ' was the only one to escape secularization under Mexican rule. Look for Chumash artwork inside the vaulted church and a moody cemetery out back.

so gorgeous!

I love visiting Santa Barbara and especially the Mission. It is positively one of the best looking missions around and it is the symbol of Santa Barbara, you HAVE to go if you are in the area! The Rose Garden across the street is the perfect spot to read a book, have a picnic or just sun bathe and enjoy the view! It would be a dream to live any where near here, the neighborhood surrounding the mission is so radiant. I loved that it was so close to my hotel; The Sandman Inn (www.thesandmaninn.com). SO affordable and it's about a 3minute drive from the Mission!

historic

The Mission, truly a breath taking piece of history. Totally picturesque, from every angle, the perfect afternoon is spent at the Garden enjoying a lunch in the grass with the mission hovering in the background. While I love my vacations in Santa Barbara, what I don't love is putting myself in the poor house everytime I feel the urge to experience this wonderful place. That is why I love staying at The Sandman Inn (http://www.thesandmaninn.com/). My favorite part of my stay is absolutely lounging by their two great pools on a sunny day. Regardless, the mission, an total staple in the tourist guide to SB, a must see every time, and trust me, the random drive-by will NOT give it justice.
