Car & motorcycle
Car
Though you can walk to most sights downtown, you’ll need a car to get around the valley. Major rental-car companies all have desks at the airport in Palm Springs.
Bus & tram
Bus
Powered by alternative fuels, SunBus (760-343-3451, 800-347-8628; www.sunline.org), the local bus service, will take you around the valley, albeit slowly, from about 5am to 10pm. Route 111 follows Hwy 111 between Palm Springs and Indio (1½ hours). The standard fare is $1 (exact change required), plus 25¢for a transfer. Buses have air-con, wheelchair lifts and a two-bicycle rack.
Local transport
Taxi
On weekends in downtown Palm Springs you can often flag a taxi. Otherwise, you’ll need to call. If you know you’re going to need one at a certain time - say, to go to the airport in the morning - book in advance.
Ace Taxi (760-835-2445)
American Cab (760-775-1477)
Yellow Cab (760-345-8398)
Bicycle
Palm Springs and the valley have an excellent network of bike paths that are great for tooling around. Big Horn Bike Adventures (760-325-3367; 302 N Palm Canyon Dr; rental per hr $6-12; 8am-4pm Mon, Tue & Thu-Sat, 10am-4pm Sun, fall-spring) rents bikes downtown. Ask about daily and weekly rates.
