Blog: thebeergeek.com - 11 November 2011
When we were up in Seattle in July, our friends Chris and Dave told of us of their November plans to visit the Bay Area. These plans included an East Bay Urban Beer Hike. As proud former East Bay-ers, the … Continue reading →

Paramount Theatre Tours – World’s Best Haunted House
Blog: Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website - 7 December 2010
If you’ve never been to the Paramount Theatre, read Christy’s recent post that describes just how rad that place is. It is, by far, my favorite Bay Area venue. I’ve been wanting to do this, and post about it, for years, but I keep forgetting.

DIY Mania All Month Long
Blog: Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website - 14 September 2010
Screenprinting, fermenting, hot-gluing, oh my! This month is like a DIY lover’s entry to Oz, a land where everything is more colorful because of spraypaint, mosaic tiles, and vintage fabric. Did you read that NY Times article about how we can’t grow up and get “real” jobs?

Sunday Morning on International
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 16 August 2010
Sunday morning on International Blvd. A sidewalk laced in fog, car exhaust, the sick-sweet smell seeping from panderias. Little girls in patent-leather shoes, dudes crouched and smoking and speaking in Vietnamese outside the street shop: “Good tattoo ain’t cheap, cheap tattoo ain’t good.” The rattle of shopping cart wheels, the bark of fenced-in dogs. I’m [...]

“Fuck the Fourth” Anarchist Book Sale
Blog: Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website - 29 June 2010
The last time there was an anarchist book sale in the Bay Area, the former vegan/currently pro-meat author of The Vegetarian Myth, Lierre Keith, got attacked with chili pepper-laced pies by a group of masked/hooded vegan anarchists.

Oakland Art Murmur
Blog: Hi and Thank You - 12 June 2010
There is no doubt about it: Oakland is awesome. I’ve heard people call it the Brooklyn of the Bay Area (which I disagree with mainly because the Bart stops running at midnight and a taxi costs way more than a Lower Manhattan –> Brooklyn ride). Nevertheless, it’s just over the bridge from SF. It has [...]

Painting the Town: Street Artists Bomb the Bay
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 30 April 2010
One of the nice things about living in the Bay Area is that people come here. Just, you know, to visit. We’re coming up on the high season, when the streets swell with tourists, clicking their cameras and speaking their different languages, hanging limbs off cable cars and sharing undoubtedly brilliant commentary in the halls [...]

FREE Sonic Youth and Kurt Cobain Rock-umentary Screenings
Blog: Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website - 29 April 2010
I’ve never heard of the Oakland Underground Film Festival before today, but I guess that’s kind of the point, right? With the SF International Film Festival keeping all the local movie critics busy right now, it’s easy to overlook our friends in the East Bay.

A Plethora of Earth Day Events
Blog: Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website - 20 April 2010
You wake up to a sunny day and realize you’ve slept past noon. Your bed is surrounded by empty soda cans and beer bottles and your hair reeks of smoke from the previous night out. You drag yourself out of bed, take a relaxing shower and throw all the bottles and cans in the trash.

Bakesale Betty – Cheap Eats and Occasionally FREE Cookies!
Blog: Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website - 5 March 2010
I fucking love San Francisco. I think it’s impossible to have a bad day in this city. Sometimes, though, I need to get out for a little R&R. What I would really like to do on these days is go home and have my mom cook for me while I dodge her questions about what [...] Related posts:FREE Cookies May Lead to World Peace.

White Elephant Sale Saturday and Sunday in Fruitvale
Blog: Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website - 4 March 2010
White elephant sales- the ultimate combination of trash and treasure! Overflowing in possibility for the cash-strapped, collectors and pack rats and a nightmarish trip to the brink of a nervous breakdown for the fastidious and organizationally obsessed- they are as part of the American landscape as tractor pulls and taco trucks. As a child, I loved [...] Related posts:

Ass Whoopin on the AC Transit: Epic Beard Man, and Why I Don’t Ride the Bus Anymore
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 21 February 2010
The voice was barely discernible, muffled by whizzing traffic and excitement. “I just rode the bus with Epic Beard Man! He was giving out candy bars and autographs, and I got a photo with him!” My friend’s Friday evening commute home had been spiced up by a sighting of Oakland’s latest internet phenomenon. As the number [...]

I know that part of my job here is to make fun of everything and crack lewd jokes, but at times, though rarely, I find myself at a loss for things to hate. Flowers and Hair Dye: Getting Ready for the New Year in Oakland’s Chinatown
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 9 February 2010
Short women elbowed through stacks of neon flowers. Banners boasted the rejuvenating wonders of herbs, tea, hair dye: “No. 1 Selling Brand in U.S.A.”, “Prince of Peace, The Name You Can Trust!” Distorted pop vocals crackled and hummed from a far-off stereo. Children gazed up at their toy windmills, decorated with carton tigers or Dora [...]

“Oh hell no,” the text read. “Hipster douches filming Oakland travel video outside the shop.” This was my best friend, writing from her post behind the counter of Tattoo 13. Dos Dias de los Muertos: Oakland Vs. SF Celebrations
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 3 November 2009
It’s not Mexican Halloween. Or Northern Californian Halloween. It’s Dia de los Muertos, and it’s everyone’s holiday now. You can’t escape Dia de los Muertos in the Bay Area. That’s a good thing. It’s a pretty bad-ass holiday, based in the Aztec belief of death not as a definitive end, but merely a continuation in a [...]

West Coast
Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 28 May 2008
We have enjoyed our recent trips to the left coast so much that we decided to plan an action-packed Memorial Day getaway out west. Accompanying us for the trip was Patrick's brother, Riley "Carl" Foster, for his first visit out west since the time he prowled Disneyland in a stroller. Much to the delight of the brothers they were able to catch all of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals en route thanks to Jet Blue's 34 channel's of Direct TV (yes we are a walking Jet Blue ad).
