Lonely Planet review

The pedestrianized City Center, between Broadway and Clay St, 12th and 14th Sts, forms the heart of downtown Oakland, which is full of historic buildings and a growing number of colorful local businesses.

The twin towers of the Ronald Dellums Federal Building are on Clay St, just behind the City Center.

Highlighting the skyline is the 1923 Tribune Tower (13th & Franklin Sts), an Oakland icon that is home to the Oakland Tribune newspaper.

The beautiful, refurbished 1914 beaux arts City Hall (14th & Clay Sts) is another urban gem.

With such easy access from San Francisco via BART and the ferry, it's worth spending part of a day exploring the City Center - and nearby Chinatown and Jack London Sq - on foot.
