Lonely Planet review for Jesso's

Jesso's is a simple charmer with indoor and outdoor seating and a full bar. Heavy on Cajun dishes, but also serving good, reliable fish and chips, poor boy sandwiches, okra, collards, beans and rice, it's very family friendly.

A Touch of Home with a little Spice

So you're looking for that spot... a mix of some tasty, filling soulfood, and maybe a little live jazz? Fresh seafood... and a full bar? A poppin' spot on the corner in cute Old Oakland offers an atmosphere that will both satisfy your stomach and enrich your eardrums.

Behind the glowing neons you'll find a quite busy little world. Some might be deterred by the crowd, but the wait is worth the reward. Start by ordering one of their signature drinks (the ladies love the Geminis) and listening to the band. The live music varies each night of the week, featuring many styles and combos of local talent. The weekends usually showcase singers as well, for those who really want a lively show.

As for the food. All entrees can be grilled or fried, and each comes with magnificently-salty collard greens and sweet, home-cooked yams. The perfect combo. Seafood is always fresh and expertly seasoned. For those who are extra hungry, or for a couple who prefers to share and sample a bit of everything, there are the infamous platters. Each platter also comes with fries and a salad so you are ensured not to leave with room left in your stomach. However, be prepared to leave a spot if you like homemade cobbler. In addition, the menu offers various salads, a nice Spicy Tequila Prawn dish served over a bed of rice (using pepper-infused tequila made on-site), burgers, wings, and other options for anyone who doesn't eat seafood.

A complete experience for any type of night. So whether you're with a date (they also have a full selection of wine and champagne), flying solo, spending time with the fam, or just visiting on business for the evening, you might give Jesso's a try. You're sure to leave with a heart made happy with some fresh food for the soul. They will welcome you with music playing till at least midnight and by serving dinners the latest in the area, until 1am.
