Lonely Planet review for À Côté
Small plates are the specialty at this foodie-scenester restaurant, and they’re deliciously creative – our favorite is the knock-out lobster-corn fritters. Great cocktails. Women can sport high heels without standing out; men can wear jeans and blend in.

Acote has a talented chef. The menu alternates often, but you can look up their current goods online. If you have a large party make sure to make a reservation, and if it is summer, make it for outside on their beautifully landscaped patio. The patio is draped with dark full material and candlelit with green ivy and plants filling in the background. The inside of the restaurant is very small and often this place can get packed. However, the good thing is that Acote has a great bar and is open late. The late hours are rare in this neighborhood for good eats. If you are on your own or with one other person, sit at the bar! Bartenders here provide the most incredible bar service, which is really saying something in Oakland! The cocktail menu is the best in Rockridge, but is also the most expensive. Often, drinks can average at ten dollars a drink, so if your a drinker, be sure to check the price on the menu. Sitting at the tables in the restaurant is also fun, but I've had the most fun at this restaurant at the bar. So, I would recommend sitting in the restaurant if you are there for romance or have more than two people.
The most disappointing thing on the menu is the overpriced cheeses. However, this chef makes everything from scratch, pasta etc. Any plate you get will exceed your expectations. I had the best scallops with spaghetti squash in years here two weeks ago. A good point is that they also have veggie options on the menu, while still managing to cater to people who crave elegant proteins. One word of advice, this is not the place for families. If you went here for a celebration of sorts, graduation etc. it would be mellow and elegant, not lively and full of toasts. Summer on the patio is a little looser vibe.Good for: atmosphere, food, Solo Travellers, service
