Northern California Hotels offering free breakfast
Budget-conscious accommodations include campgrounds, hostels and motels. Because midrange properties generally offer better value, most of our accommodations fall into this category.
At midrange motels and hotels, expect clean, comfortable and decent-sized double rooms with private bathroom and amenities including cable TV, direct-dial telephone, a coffeemaker and perhaps a microwave and minifridge.
Top-end lodgings offer more amenities, and perhaps a scenic location, designer decor and/or a historical building. Pools, fitness rooms, business centers, full-service restaurants and bars and other convenient facilities are standard.
In Northern California, where it rarely gets hot, air-con is not often provided; ask when you book.
Some accommodations offer online computer terminals for guests, sometimes for an additional fee; others offer only wi-fi.
When wireless internet access is offered, there may be a fee, especially for in-room access. Look for free wi-fi hot spots in hotel public areas (eg lobby, poolside).
Many lodgings are now exclusively nonsmoking. Where they still exist, smoking rooms are often left unrenovated and in less desirable locations. Expect a hefty ‘cleaning fee’ ($100 or more) if you light up in designated nonsmoking rooms.
