Introducing North County Coast
A little north of La Jolla, the coastal cliffs shrink quickly, making way for a series of wide, inviting beaches that stretch nearly unbroken all the way to Camp Pendleton, the huge military base that takes up the northwest corner of the county.

Known simply as ‘North County, ’ this region resembles the San Diego of 40 years ago, though more and more development, especially east of I-5, has turned it into a giant bedroom community. Though there is not much to distinguish one town from the next, this is a great place for a lazy soak in the laid-back SoCal scene. And San Diego is never far away. Via I-5 in nonrush-hour traffic, Del Mar is only 20 to 30 minutes from San Diego, Oceanside 45 to 60 minutes; so you can zip in for a citified afternoon or evening.
