By car, take the Alexander Ave exit just after the Golden Gate Bridge and dip left under the freeway. Bicycles take roughly the same route, although when bike traffic moves on the west side of the bridge there’s no need to pass under the freeway. Conzelman Rd, to the right, takes you up along the bluffs; you can also take Bunker Rd, which leads to the headlands through a one-way tunnel.

Golden Gate Transit (415-923-2000; www.goldengatetransit.org) bus 2 leaves from the corner of Pine and Battery Sts in the Financial District to Sausalito and the Headlands ($3.25). On Sunday and holidays MUNI (415-673-6864) bus 76 runs from the CalTrain depot in San Francisco to Fort Barry and Rodeo Beach.
