Santa Fe National Forest
Santa Fe National Forest information
Beyond Montezuma, Hwy 65 leads to the eastern edge of the forest, where trails head off into the Pecos Wilderness. The most popular day hike, a 10-mile round-trip starting at El Porvenir campground , follows trail 223 to the flat summit of Hermit Peak (10,160ft), with amazing views. Some sections switchback steeply and might be a little unnerving if you're prone to vertigo. To pick up topo maps and free trail guides, stop into the ranger station.
