Gold Country

Getting there & around

The appropriately named Hwy 49 links the towns of the Gold Country. Except for some buses around the Auburn district, Nevada City and Placerville, the Gold Country is definitely car country. To fully enjoy one of the state’s most scenic roads - let alone to simply get around - you will need your own wheels.

From Sierra City in the north to Jamestown in the south is over 200 miles on Hwy 49. It’s a good, mostly two-lane road. To even begin to appreciate everything along it, plan a minimum of a five-day journey.
