Getting there & around
The Eastern Sierra is best explored under your own steam, although it is possible to access the area by public transportation. Buses operated by Carson Ridgecrest Eastern Sierra Transit (CREST; 760-872-1901) make round trips between Bishop and Reno on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and between Mammoth Lakes and Ridgecrest on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, stopping at all towns in between. Fares depend on distance; one-way tickets from Reno to Mammoth cost $23, from Ridgecrest to Mammoth $21. Reservations are required.
Getting to Ridgecrest involves catching a Greyhound(800-231-2222; www.greyhound.com) bus to Mojave and then switching to a Kern Regional Transit (800-323-2396; fare $4) bus.
Inyo Mono Transit (760-872-1901) operates a weekday bus service three times daily between Bishop and Lone Pine (via Big Pine and Independence) and from Bishop to Mammoth Lakes twice daily. One-way fares range from $2 to $5.50.
