Getting there & around
There is no public transportation to Death Valley, though a few charter bus tours operate from Las Vegas.
All of the roads into Death Valley offer spectacular views. Driving west or north into the valley from US-95 (Nevada) or I-15 (California) respectively takes you past high desert scenery that could easily fit into Mongolia or Patagonia. Driving out of the valley via Panamint Springs, along Hwy 190, is breathtaking when you can see the entire Sierra Nevada stretched out in front of you.
Gas is expensive in the park, so fill up your tank beforehand. Furnace Creek’s visitors center is about 110 miles (2½ to 3 hours) from Baker or 145 miles (three to 3½ hours) from Las Vegas. Bicycles are only allowed on park roads open to vehicle traffic.
