Getting there & around
The main route through this part of California is Hwy 99. I-80 meets Hwy 99 in Sacramento, and I-5 meets Hwy 99 south of Bakersfield. Amtrak trains are a leisurely way up and down the state, but only go as far south as Bakersfield. Amtrak runs buses from there to Los Angeles. The train stops in just about every town but Visalia - travelers to that town get off at Hanford and transfer to a shuttle provided by the train company. Greyhound (800-229-9424) buses stop in many major Central Valley towns and cities.
