Getting there & away
Catalina Express(310-519-1212, 800-481-3470; www.catalinaexpress.com; round-trip about $50) operates frequent scheduled ferries to Avalon from San Pedro (1¼ hours), Long Beach and Dana Point (Orange County, 1½ hours), and to Two Harbors from San Pedro (1½ hours) only.
The Marina Flyer (310-305-7250; www.catalinaferries.com; round trip $63) makes one or two departures daily from Fisherman’s Wharf in Marina del Rey to Avalon (1¼ hours) and Two Harbors (one hour).
From Newport Beach in Orange County, the Catalina Flyer(949-673-5245; www.caladventures.com; round-trip $44) also goes to Avalon once daily (1¼ hours).
Fifteen-minute helicopter rides with the Island Express (310-510-2525; www.islandexpress.com) depart from the boat terminals in San Pedro and next to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, and cost $76/144 one way/round trip.
