Introducing Big Sur to San Luis Obispo
This is the Hwy 1 of a million dreams and a thousand car ads. The road follows the dramatic coast for 130 miles south until it joins with Hwy 101 at San Luis Obispo. Even if your driving skills are up for the myriad of hills and switchbacks, others aren’t: expect to average under 40mph for the route. Parts of the road are battle-scarred, evidence of the constant struggle to keep it open after landslides and washouts.
