Blue Nile - RIP
torped0 recommends this,
Dinner at the Blue Nile was enchanting, and you were almost certain to be greeted by the mother-daughter team who owned the restaurant, and personally served heaping basketfuls of Injera along with spicy plates of family-style delectables. Sadly, this Berkeley standby has closed it's doors and the blue tile facade is just that - empty. I hear they finally retired.
However, travel down Telegraph towards Oakland and you will find no less than 5 or 6 delicious Ethiopian joints that may satisfy your craving. The closest is Cafe Colucci, which is now the new Berkeley Ethiopian joint to be and be seen at. It's casual like most other Berkeley spots, and conveniently located near The White Horse (an entertaining local treasure and welcoming gay bar). The food is definitely tasty, and the atmosphere is brighter and louder than the Blue Nile, but still comfortable. Lunch is a more laid-back proposition than dinner. The Injera is delicious and quite sour, and the food is well-spiced. The combination plates are always worth it, and it's quite a deal to come with a group and share a few. It's also connected to an Ethiopian market where you can score your very own exciting Ethiopian spices.
A few blocks farther down Telegraph (you will have entered Oakland!) and you will arrive at Addis - darker, quieter, and intriguingly delicious. The Injera isn't as sour and the food is spicier, which maybe has something to do with a more Ethiopian clientele. It's more low-key and the plates differ a bit from Colucci, but once again you can't go wrong with a combo plate. Be prepared to eat a lot. And get some honey wine or steaming hot tea!
