Lonely Planet review for Bette's Oceanview Diner

The diner food is fresh and well-prepared at this hugely popular spot. Table waits can be long, but you can opt to take out from the adjacent deli counter.

    Flash Back to the Fifties

Bette's is a time warp to another era: a traditional '50's type diner in Berkeley's trendy 4th St. shopping district. It's a cozy, crowded, busy diner where you will feel welcomed and comfortable. The fast moving spot on wait staff make up time for the up to 30-40 minutes (longer on weekends) you may wait for a table. In a hurry? Take a counter spot, you'll get seated quicker, and the service - and food - are just as good.

Speaking of food, that's the reason for the wait. Breakfast is best. Eggs so light, fluffy and creamy I've had nothing like them elsewhere. I personally go for the herb and cheese omelet: just the right blend of lightly seasoned greenery accompanied by choice of breads or the daily scone, fried potatoes with onions, and a slice of melon.

My second favorite breakfast at Bette's is the oven pancake, which is a closely guarded secret recipe. It's not even in Bette's pancake book, which is for sale at the counter. This delicious concoction takes longer to cook, so you'll have to wait a bit, but it's worth every minute. It's decadent fluffiness is reminiscent of Dutch Babies, and it comes with a choice of fruit or chocolate baked in.

My third choice is Bette's special Potato Pancakes. Often, sour dough waffles and pancakes are the daily special. And there is always an egg special, in addition to daily omelet choices such as apple chicken sausage, or "The Maryland," which is corned beef hash with eggs. My boyfriend many times finds himself with the lox and bagel, or a breakfast burrito.

For lunch, you'll find hearty diner fare from sandwiches, salads to dinner plates. And next door in the bakery your choices range from cookies to bread pudding.

There's a giant slice of cherry pie hanging from the ceiling in the entry area at Bette's. It reminds me of a rocket ship, but it's symbolic of what Bette's offers: comfort foods, streamlined service and great epicurean treats. Give it a go, you'll be glad you did.
