Getting there & around
You’ll need a car to get around the Barstow area. Some major car-rental agencies have offices in town.
Greyhound (800-231-2222; www.greyhound.com) buses from LA ($25, 2½ to 4½ hours), Las Vegas ($29, 2¾ hours), Palm Springs ($29, 4¾ to 5¾ hours) and San Diego ($29, 4½ to 6¼ hours) arrive at a station(760-256-8757; 1611 E Main St; 9am-6pm Mon-Sat, 7:30am-4:30pm Sun) east of downtown, near many of the motels.
One Amtrak (800-872-7245; www.amtrak.com) train, the Southwest Chief, stops at Barstow’s historic railroad station (685 N 1st Ave; 9am-11:30pm), but schedules are inconvenient and trains often run late. This route travels west to San Bernardino ($18, two hours) and LA ($27, 3¾ to 4½ hours), and east to Needles ($30, 2½ to three hours). There is no staffed ticket office. Thruway bus services depart from the Greyhound bus station to Bakersfield ($20, three hours), for rail connections north to San Francisco and beyond.
