Getting there & away
Amtrak’s California Zephyr stops in Auburn on its daily runs between the Bay Area and Chicago via Reno and Denver. Amtrak(800-872-7245; www.capitolcorridor.org) also runs several buses a day west linking Auburn with Sacramento ($11; one hour) where you can connect to Bay Area and Central Valley trains. There are usually two buses daily east to Reno (2½ hours).
The Gold Country Stage (530-477-0103; www.goldcountrystage.com) links Auburn with Grass Valley and Nevada City several times a day (fares $3 to $5).
