Introducing Along Highway 101
Traveling inland along Hwy 101 is a good alternative for people wanting to travel quickly between the Bay Area and Southern California. Although the landscape is not the striking scenery of Hwy 1, this historic road has a beauty of its own: from the fertile fields of Salinas immortalized by Steinbeck to the oak-dappled golden hills to the south. Along the way there are several emotive missions, amazing Pinnacles National Monument and lots of good wineries in and around Paso Robles.
If you are taking Hwy 1 in one direction, you certainly should consider Hwy 101 in the other. From the Bay Area you can reach San Luis Obispo in three hours, but although it takes longer, its worth it. If you don’t have wheels you’ll probably go this way anyway. Both Greyhound and Amtrak link the north and the south via Hwy 101, the latter on the spectacular Coast Starlight.
We've all had that craving for the warm sunshine, sandy beaches and fabulous lifestyles of the rich and famous that call California home. But there is much more to discover away from the big sights on a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
Western USA Circuit
When travelling on the Western USA Circuit, discover gourmet delights in California, beat the unruly heat of the Nevada desert, feel the call of the wild in Utah and engage with some small-town locals in Arizona. Then take the road back to the coast to finish up in vibrant San Francisco.
