Lonely Planet review

'Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!' came the order from Colonel Prescott to revolutionary troops on June 17, 1775. Considering the ill preparedness of the revolutionary soldiers, the bloody battle that followed resulted in a surprising number of British casualties. Ultimately, however, the Redcoats prevailed (an oft-overlooked fact).

The so-called Battle of Bunker Hill is ironically named, as most of the fighting took place on Breed's Hill, where the Bunker Hill Monument stands today. The 200ft granite obelisk rewards physically fit visitors with fine views at the top of its 294 steps. The adjacent museum contains historical dioramas depicting the battle, and NPS park rangers give summer talks and musket-firing demonstrations. A reenactment of the battle takes place every June on Monument Sq.
