Lonely Planet review for Helmand
Fusing flavors and techniques from India and the Middle East, the Helmand shows off the rich, diverse and little-known cuisine of Afghanistan. The active, open kitchen - complete with an oven that turns out melt-in-your-mouth flatbread - is entertainment enough in this simple dining room. And the dishes it produces are exotic and enticing. Not to mention that the place is owned by the brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Make a reservation, or go early/late
born2run recommends this,
Excellent food, reasonably priced, interesting ambiance, decent service. This is an extremely popular restaurant, so don't expect to pop in at 7 pm and get seated. Locals often make prime-time reservations weeks in advance; but if you can't, it's often possible to get seated on a Saturday night if you're willing to eat at 5:30 or 9 pm.
The homemade bread you can watch being baked in the wood-burning oven at the front of the dining area is outstanding (although don't expect to be able to get seconds; my experience is that what they bring over once is what you'll get).
This is a place known for both its tasty vegetarian offerings and grilled meats. Don't be afraid of either thinking the place only specializes in one. I've yet to dislike anything I've had here. Beef lovers: The theeka kabab was really good. Order a couple of appetizers and share. And, I haven't yet gone wrong with ordering some of the moderately priced but enjoyable house wine.
While not "cheap," this is an affordable night out in Cambridge.
