Citi Performing Arts Center
Boston’s biggest music and dance venue, the Citi Performing Arts Center is comprised of two theaters which face off across Tremont St. The opulent and enormous Wang Theatre, built in 1925, has one of the largest stages in the country. The Boston Ballet performs here, but the Wang also hosts extravagant music and modern dance productions, as well as occasional giant-screen movies (the center was originally built as a movie palace). It also houses the more intimate Shubert Theatre across the street, known as the ‘Little Princess’ of the Theater District.

Cutler Majestic Theater
This beautiful beaux-arts-style opera house dates to 1903. One century after its construction, the theater was sumptuously renovated and reopened by Emerson College. Today, the performances that take place here are incredibly diverse, including shows by Opera Boston, seasonal celebrations like the popular Celtic Christmas Sojourn, dance events such as the Flamenco Festival or Tango Stories, comedy, music and more.

Shear Madness
America’s longest-running comedy operates out of the Charles Playhouse, in a former church situated on a sleazy street (don’t worry, it adds to the mood). An odd mix of half-play and half-improvisation, the show features an outrageous gay hair stylist and various freak-show characters in a whodunit-style performance where actors ad-lib the plot based on cues from the audience.

Jacques Cabaret
Head to this dive on a dark side street to experience the gay culture of the South End before gentrification took over. A shaded-lamp and pool-table kind of place, Jacques hosts outstanding low-budget drag shows every night. We think Mizery is the cat’s pajamas.
